FUSION is a unique programme for Secondary 1 students that integrates the teaching of elective subjects like Art, Home Economics and Design & Technology towards a shared problem - to set up a Cultural Fusion Restaurant. The curriculum is planned such that students learn about the various cultures as part of national education and use their knowledge to design art pieces, products and healthy recipes for the restaurant. As the culmination of the programme, students set up restaurant to serve healthy meals to invited guests.

The 3 subjects are planned as a modular system. Students attends 10 weeks of Art, followed by 10 weeks of Design and Technology and 10 weeks of Home Econs in any order of subjects. At the end of the year, as a post examination activity, each class will convert their classrooms into restaurants to serve 6 guests.

To help students better understand how to design items for a restaurant and to manage a restaurant, the students are assigned group task to observe restaurant and to interview the people in the restaurants. They will then present their findings to their classmates.

Once the students have clearer picture of a restaurant, they will embark to design their own products, art pieces and healthy fusion recipes for their cultural fusion restaurants. The students are taught the design process to create the above items. The lessons are planned to engaging them in learning through exploration, team work and presentation. Outdoor activities conducted for students to draw inspiration from their environment to come up with their own creation.

After the end of the 30 weeks programme and as a post examination activity, the class has 1 week to prepare for the set up of their cultural fusion restaurant. The class is divided into various departments such as Management, Banquet & Service, Decoration & Logistics, Marketing & Publicity, Purchaser & Accounts and Kitchen. Each department has to submit a proposal of their roles, time plans and budget for their departments. The Management team will decide on the budget allocation. On the actual day, they have 3 hours to set up the restaurant and prepare the dishes. They are to serve 6 guests.

The project won the Innovator Award at Innergy 2006.
