This
project focuses on the analysis and applications of extracts obtained
from discarded citrus fruit peels. The students presented a paper
of their research project at the Nanyang Environmental Science Conference
2007 under the theme of Waste Management. They shared the stage
with students from Hwa Chong Institution (High School Section) and
two industry players.
Analysis
of the extract by gas chromatography / mass spectrometry (GC/MS)
revealed that the main components are pinene, linalool and limonene
(terpenes). Further analysis showed that the extracts are not mutagenic
by Ames test and is found to have anti-bacterial properties. In
addition, our extract is found to possess a nice and pleasant odour
and this present its' potential use in perfumery. Upon review of
relevant literature, the project focused on potential applications
of the extract: solvent for cleaning, styrofoam disposal, glue,
insecticide, ink and anti-bacterial room spray.
