Mission / Objectives of Department :

Craft and Technology Department comprises of 3 subjects area – Design & Technology, Home Economics and Visual Art.

The 3 subjects are coursework based where students learn the design process through experiential learning. Through the subjects, pupils are challenged to think out of the box to be creative to design and produce products, art pieces and healthy meals.

The department aims to develop in all our pupils critical thinking skills, creativity, life skill and appreciation of design, aesthetics and food technology in their day-to-day life.

 Programmes and Activities :

For the Secondary 1 programme, The 3 subjects - Art, Homec and D&T, are integrated. The pupils work on “Cultural Fusion” where they learn the various cultures and different aspects in setting up a restaurant. They then used their knowledge to design art pieces, products and healthy meal. As the finale of the programme, students set up restaurant in their own classes to serve healthy meals to invited guests.

For the Secondary 2 programme, the 3 subjects are taught independently. The programme is designed to focuse on developing the products for particular user for D&T and Homec whereas for art, the theme given is “Endangered Species”. The curriculum is planned such that students learnt can be developed to understand user needs better and to learn about protecting the animals to create a better environment to live in.

For the Upper Secondary Programme, The 3 subjects are taught independently to prepare the pupils for the GCE ‘N’ and ‘O’ Level Examinations. The subjects are coursework based whereby pupils are to design artefact, art pieces and nutrition meals for the subject, Design & Technology, Visual Art and Food & Nutrition respectively.

In Dunman Sec, we created the Design Nexus, a space to inspire creation, in 2003. The Nexus, also commonly known as, is used as a studio and an exhibition area to showcase pupils’ good works. This space will take on different look every year. A group of pupils of different ages who are interested in design volunteered their time to design and construct this space yearly. They are also trained to be facilitators to facilitate exhibition that is held yearly that is opened for all schools.

Last year, a group of pupils including the graduated pupils have volunteered to paint murals on the walls of the D&T block. The murals painted take on different themes such as colours, technology, architecture design, product design and font design. The murals painted gave the D&T block a brand new look and provide inspiration to many pupils.

The Eureka Room was also created to harness creativity and independent learning among students who are taking Home Economics and Food & Nutrition. We have put in the sewing machines back to ensure this soft skill will not be lost with technology and consumerism. The students come after school to finish their craftwork or their group project work as all lower sec programmes consist of project work, some in groups, others as individual work.

To cater to more group work and independent learning, the traditional classroom setting has been replaced with a more interactive environment using circular tables to encourage discussions, sharing of ideas between members of a group and working on visual presentations like using the vanguard or mahjong paper to illustrate their works. These tables come in bright yellows and lime greens, matching that of the walls as well. Its vibrant outlook mirrors the revamped SOWs which use the TLLM, PBL approach as well as peer and group learning as advocated by MOE.
