DUNMAN SECONDARY SCHOOL CHOIR – Ambassador of Singapore in Prague
Choristers of DUNMAN SECONDARY SCHOOL CHOIR participated in the 15th International Festival of Advent and Christmas Music, in Prague, Czech Republic from 25th November to 2nd December 2005. This prestigious festival attracted 55 choirs from 15 countries all over the world. The Choir returned to Singapore triumphant, with a GOLD AWARD from an international panel of esteemed judges.
Dunman Secondary School Choir emerged among the top 8 choirs in this category of competition, impressing the judges with their maturity of presentation and dynamic performance. The judges highlighted the cohesive blend of the Choir’s voices, stable intonation and expressive dynamic shading. It was also a proud moment to hear the judges’ praise that although a secondary school choir, the Choir contributed much to the competition. Mr. Toh also received special commendation from the judges on the interesting choice of repertoire and his expressive conducting.
During the short period of time in Prague, the students gained many valuable memories and varied experiences that enriched their lives. They appreciated that this trip had given them countless opportunities to build strong bonds between each other and to develop themselves in all aspects of life. There was also no doubt that by the end of the trip they had grown as a choir in their musicality and performance. The young choristers have certainly returned to Singapore, not only as more confident and independent individuals, but forever united as one - Dunman Choir.
Europe Tour 2007
Choristers of DUNMAN SECONDARY SCHOOL CHOIR participated in the 2nd International Festival of Advent and Christmas Music, in Bratislava, Slovakia from the 6th-9th of December 2007. This prestigious festival attracted choirs from all over the word. It was a triumphant moment for the students when it was announced that the Choir had achieved the Gold they have all been working hard for, with a score of 92.4 points in the children’s category from an international panel of esteemed judges. Joy filled the Bratislava marketplace, despite the cold weather. Their efforts through much of the year-end holidays and abstinence from their favourite foods had paid off, finally!
During this trip, the students were exposed to many other choirs and their cultures and they gained many invaluable insights and experiences. The choristers learnt to care for one another on the trip, and grew together as a choir in their musicality and performance. Friendships and bonds within the choir were strengthened through the trainings, the warm fellowship despite the cold and the caroling along the cobbled streets of Cesky Krumlov and Bratislava. It was indubitably an experience of a lifetime and the fond memories they had together will be held dear to their hearts for the rest of their lives.
Performances and Concerts in 2008
We then had a concert, titled ‘I Believe’, alongside with 2 other choirs—St Anthony’s Convent and Catholic Junior College on the 8th of April at the Victoria Concert Hall. The performance repertoire included songs such as ‘Circle Of Life’, ‘Ping An Ye’, ‘Come Travel with Me’ and a combine finale with the other choirs in which we sang ‘I believe’ and ‘One Day More’.
Choir Camp 2008: Survivor
The aims and objectives of this year’s camp are bonding amongst choristers, to have fun and that survival cannot be accomplished alone.
The main highlight of all choir camps has always been the Talent Night, whereby campers in their respective groups had to come up with an entertaining performance to impress the judges. We were very much honoured to invite our alumni and seniors back to soak in the joyous ambience that evening. The theme was “Reality shows” and we were very blessed this year to have exciting and laugh-till-you-drop performances that evening, despite the short preparation time the groups were given.
Most of the choristers enjoyed the whole process of it; even the camp committee had loads of fun planning the camp together.
