2008 has been an eventful year for NCC Air. We began the year with great cheer as we were informed that we had once again clinched the GOLD AWARD in the annual Best Unit Competition (BUC) 2007. This is the 6th year running that we had received the gold award. This great achievement is testimony to the passion, dedication and hard work of all the teachers in charge, cadet officers and student cadets.
Our aeromodeling team comprising of Pilot Elijah from Secondary 1F and Flight Mechanic John Lee from Secondary 3D2, had worked tremendously hard throughout the year. They did the school proud by emerging as champions in the annual Aeromodeling Competition, line control category. This is a repeat of the great achievement in 2006 when we also emerged champions in the rat race category. It was quite remarkable as Elijah was able to beat many other secondary 3 competitors who were older and bigger than him.
Several new initiatives were introduced this year. Our part A cadets attended their first Camp Feast held at NCC HQ. They really had a good time trying out the rock climbing, flying fox and paint ball shooting game. During our annual Part A and B Camp in June, our cadets were introduced to war games conducted by an external agency. They were taught urban warfare. The exciting training culminated in a war game where they took turns to defend their position and ambush enemy position.
3rd Sergeant Firdaus from Secondary 3H was selected for the challenging Annual Kayaking Expedition in June. It was a fantastic feat and achievement for him as he only obtained his 1-Star Kayaking Certification in February this year.
4 of our lucky Part C cadets participated in the annual Endau Rompin Expedition in September. They brought back with them valuable lessons such as greater confidence and the value of team work.
15 of our Part D cadets went to Siem Reap, Cambodia for the Water For Life Project, in December. They spent 3 days helping to construct a water tank for a village. After all the hard but meaningful work, they spent the last day visiting the Angkor Wat and other historical places of interest. It was a very meaningful trip for the cadets.
The unit has been working very hard to make training fun and valuable to all the cadets. We strive to do the best in all competitions that we take part in. We hope that all the hard work will translate to yet another Gold Award for NCC (Air) this year.
