With the intake of the Secondary One pupils, the badminton team now has more than 40 members. Our new members are put under the charge of Coach Lew whose technical expertise in badminton has helped our new players build a strong foundation in badminton.
Under the leadership of Mr Toh Wee Kai, another very competent coach, our competitive team of ‘B’ and ‘C’ division players have shown marked improvements in their playing skills. In addition, our coaches have also managed to instill in our athletes, core values such as determination, cooperation and, most important of all, sportsmanship.
Our players are constantly encouraged to challenge themselves to achieve ‘Personal Bests’ not only in badminton, but also in their academic studies. At the same time, the CCA also provided opportunities for grooming in leadership skills as players are encouraged and guided to take on leadership roles such as team captains and vice captains for the various tournaments.
January and February were both exciting and yet busy months for every member of the team. January saw the start of the East Zone championship 2008.
Our ‘C’ boys played their best against strong competitors from Coral Secondary School, Springfield Secondary School, Greenview Secondary School and Changkat Changi Secondary School. Despite not doing as well as expected, the team kept their fighting spirits up throughout the competition period, and managed to thrash the players from Changkat Changi Secondary School with a score of 4-1.
To further beef up their competition experience, the team went on to compete in other external competitions like the Pilot Pen Cup during the March break, the Wee Kim Wee Challenge Trophy in June and the Cheers Doubles’ competition during the September break.
The second semester’s training was stepped up in terms of physical training and technical expertise, in preparation for next year’s East Zone Championships in January 2009.
