Thank You

After 9 fulfilling years at Dunman Secondary School, I will be taking on a new position as Cluster Superintendent in the West Zone with effect from December 15 2009. Ms Beatrice Chong, currently Principal Designate, will take over the school. Ms Chong was posted to Dunman Secondary after completing the Leaders in Education Programme in Sept 2009 in preparation for her new role. Ms Chong began her teaching career as a teacher in St Andrew's Junior College. She then completed a Masters' Degree at Harvard University on a scholarship after which she was posted to a school as a Vice-Principal. Dunman will be in very good hands under the capable leadership of Ms Chong who has already made an impact on Dunman Secondary in the short time she has been with us.

I am grateful for having been given the privilege of ensuring the completion of the school's onsite upgrading project which began in June 2007. The project was completed in September 2009. I would like to thank everyone for their support and for putting up with some inconveniences. We now have an air-conditioned multi-purpose hall that can seat the entire school, an indoor sports hall, a 250 seat theatrette, 7 Science labs including the life sciences research centre and a sheltered basketball court which doubles up as an amphitheatre. The school is in the process of setting up D'Experimental Station with the help of NIE and Hyflux Pte Ltd.

It has been my privilege to head Dunman Secondary for 9 years.  As a Principal, I have met and worked with countless numbers of people including staff, 9 cohorts of students, parents, alumni, partners and other stakeholders. All have deeply enriched my experiences.  i would like to extend my heartfelt appreciation to all who have made Dunman's progress over the years possible. Without everyone's commitment and dedication, the school would not have risen to become one of the premier schools in the district.

If there is one word that would aptly describe the staff of Dunman it would be “committed”.  I would like to thank my staff for always placing the interests of students first and for giving off their best to help our students have a happy and memorable school experience.  Their team spirit and genuine desire to help one another give off their best is commendable. The school management committee comprising Head of Departments, Subject Heads, Senior Teachers and key administration staff are to be commended for their fine leadership and work. Our executive and administration staff under our VP Admin provide valuable support to staff and students. I would like to thank my talented staff for their unstintingly support and kind words at the farewell they organised for me recently.

The Wonderful Students of Dunman Secondary

With more than a thousand students of diverse personalities, abilities and interests, a school is a vibrant place filled with varied activities, events and occurrences.  As we mould our students into Distinctive Dunmanites ready to face life’s challenges, we examine and improve upon our own strengths and abilities always striving to do our best for our precious charges.  My staff would concur that the challenges we sometimes face has made life more interesting, meaningful and memorable.  I thank my students for being who they are, trying to be the best they can be and for the care they always show towards others. Their many achievements is a testimony of their strong will to achieve the best they can in all that they endeavour to do. I would like to thank the graduating classes for singing my favourite songs and imitating my favourite singers during the recent graduating party and prom night. I will miss them terribly.

The School Advisory Committee

My deepest appreciation goes to the Dunman School Advisory Committee which has given the school much support over the years. Our Chairman, Mr Roland Ng San Tiong graduated from Dunman Secondary School in 1968 as the top pupil from the Chinese Stream.  Mr Ng’s wife also hails from Dunman Secondary.  Mr Ng has been a member of the SAC since 1985. Today, Mr Ng is a successful Businessman who has clinched the 2008 Businessman of the Year Award.  We thank Mr Ng for his generous contributions to the school. We also thank Mr Tay Yeong Kiang, Mr Soh Hang Kwang, Mr Leck Tin Heng, Dr Phua (all old boys of Dunman Sec) and Ms Dilys Ong for their many contributions. The school is deeply indebted to the SAC.

The Dunman Secondary Alumni (DSA)

I would like to thank the Dunman Secondary Alumni for their continuous support of the school. In October this year, the main alumnni held a brainstorming session with the alumni choir, alumni band, uniformed group, Chinese stream alumni and ex-student leaders to chart directions for the future. Our Twinning Partners, Zhuo Dao Quan Secondary School in Wuhan, Santa Laurensia in Indonesia and Rukmini Devi Public School in New Delhi

Dunman partnership with Zhuo Dao Quan Secondary School in Wuhan is into its fourth year. We thank the school for the opportunity to learn much about Chinese culture and for giving me the opportunity in 2008 to conduct a workshop for English teachers in the district. Every year, the students from China put up a most memorable concert together with Dunman students.

For the first time this year, Dunman hosted students from our twinning school in India, the Rukmini Devi Public School. Our students had a most meaningful cultural exchange programme when they visited the school in November last year. In March this year we welcomed the students of Rukmini Devi Public School to our school. Together with the students from RDPS, were students from Santa Laurensia School in Indonesia which has an exchange programme with Dunman Secondary since 2005. In addition to a pottery workshop conducted by the Secretary of the Dunman Dedicated and Supportive Parents' Group and a life-sciences workshop by Dunman staff, students took part in an amazing race with Dunman students. We thank the students for the wonderful concert they put up for our students.

Dunman Secondary school is extremely honoured this year to have the Lieutenant-Governor of New Delhi, Mr Tejendra Khanna dialogue with students of Dunman Secondary School and students of Rukmini Devi Public School during their twinning attachment in November this year. Our students gained a deeper understanding of the challenges that a cosmopolitan state like Delhi faces. Our students shared that what impressed them the most about New Delhi is the warmth, hospitable and caring nature of the people of New Delhi.

I would like to thank all those who have rendered unstinting support to the school and who have aided in the school's progress over the years. The school looks forward to greater collaborations and achievements.
